caring for your glasses
Simple steps to look after your glasses will ensure clear vision and comfortable wear. Blink Opticians encourage good habits like proper handling and regular cleaning. It’s important to us that you are always getting the best out of your glasses so feel free to pop into Blink Opticians at any time and we’ll happily check their fit, adjusting them if necessary. We’ll even give them a thorough clean and polish!
Handling your glasses:
- To take your glasses on and off hold them carefully with both hands at the temples - about midway down the sides. Using both hands will also protect the set adjustment and make sure your glasses do not stretch out of shape
- Never hold them by the lenses - this will cause grease, oil and smears
- Do not wear your glasses on the top of your head as this can distort their shape
- Don’t leave your glasses in direct heat or sunlight (like near a window) in order to protect their shape
- Close your frames before placing them on any surface, and it may seem obvious, but never lay them lens-side down
- Coatings expand at different rates to lenses so don’t leave your glasses near intense heat (e.g. on a car dashboard) as the coating may crack
Storing your glasses:
- Keep your glasses in a protective case when you are not wearing your glasses. This prevents the accumulation of dust and dirt, prevents accidental scratching and will also protect them from being sat on!
- Never put your glasses in a purse or bag without putting them in a case
Cleaning your glasses:
- Dust and dirt on your lenses can hamper your vision and even scratch your lens. It’s important that you keep your glasses as clean as possible to get the best out of them
- Always use the soft lens cloth provided in your glasses case as other materials can cause scratches
- Every now and then rinse your glasses with warm water (e.g. when you’re about to do the washing up as the suds will get any grease off the frame and lenses)! The warm water will get rid of most of the dirt and grime, and make it easier for the rest of it to come off. After rinsing, wipe the lenses thoroughly then put them on or put them away
Extra tips:
- Avoid exposing your glasses to personal care products like hairspray, perfume and makeup as they can damage lens coatings and cosmetics will dirty the lenses
- Your glasses are bound to bend out of shape over time. Ill-fitting glasses can strain your eyes and interfere with vision correction, (especially with varifocals). To ensure proper fit, have your glasses adjusted by us regularly. Many factors come into play. For instance how much you wear your glasses and how active you are will determine how frequently you need to have them adjusted
